WHAT IS A DARUMA?

Daruma are Japanese dolls symbolising perseverance and good fortune, inspired by Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen. With no arms or legs, they represent determination.
One eye is painted when making a wish, and the other when the wish comes true.
They encourage people to overcome obstacles, and are often renewed annually during specific rituals.

A Daruma is a Japanese good luck charm, inspired by Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. It is round and depicted without pupils.

When you buy it, you make a wish or set a goal. You then draw one of its two pupils. When your wish or goal is fulfilled, you draw the other one, symbolizing achievement.

Popular in Japan, Daruma are often buy at the beginning of the year as symbols of renewal and hope.

After the wishes have been fulfilled, they are usually taken back to the temple where they were purchased to be burnt 🔥 in a special ritual, signifying gratitude and the end of the cycle of purpose.
